Varnishing Point


Varnish suggests a hard protective coat. You would think you could apply it to other classic idioms or phrases. Some come close.

“Civilization is but a thin varnish stretched across the passions of the human heart.”

“He’s sensitive to criticisms. He seems to have a very thin varnish.”

“A veil of varnish passed over her eyes.”

“Come out, damned varnish!”
